Francis Bacon exhibition of photos of Freud opens tomorrow

Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane is delighted to announce a display of material relating to Lucian Freud drawn from Francis Bacon’s archive and studio which is located in the Gallery.  The significance of this exhibition is that items on display relate  to the recently auctioned painting at Christie’s, New York of ‘Three Studies of Lucian Freud 1969’ by Francis Bacon.  The painting sold last night at a record price of $142.4m, – €104m.

The material, relating to the triptych, (three paintings in one), includes a heavily manipulated photograph of Lucian Freud seated on a bed.  This photograph taken by John Deakin in the 1960’s, is manipulated by Bacon in advance of painting. The photograph is deliberately torn with the corner folded, so that Freud’s left leg is obscured. The fold is fixed with paper clips as was a practice of Bacon’s and the paint marks on the photograph indicate that Bacon consulted the photograph during the painting process.

“Lucian Freud was a significant figure in Francis Bacon’s life during the 1950s and 60s and he is the subject of some of Bacon’s most memorable paintings. We are very fortunate to have the archive of Francis Bacon in the Hugh Lane as it is a unique resource which relates directly to his artworks and adds an immense amount of information on Francis Bacon and his art” says Barbara Dawson, director.

Francis Bacon and Lucian Freud were friends in the 1950s and 60s and over 60 images of Lucian Freud were discovered in Francis Bacon’s Studio which is now located in Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane. A display of images of Lucian Freud including photographs by John Deakin commissioned by Francis Bacon will go on exhibition in the Gallery on 14 November 2013.

Film Festival starts with Gala Screening

Season_Ticket_IMAGE-1
The Jameson Dublin International Film Festival opened with a bang yesterday, 14 February 2013, presenting the Gala screening of Broken, with stars Tim Roth and Cillian Murphy in attendance, along with director Rufus Norris, writer Mark O’Rowe and producers Dixie Linder, Tally Gardner and Nick Marston. The very special event also saw Cillian Murphy present a Volta, the festival career achievement award, to Tim Roth before the screening, celebrating Roth’s roles in some of the most iconic films of his three decade long career.
Commenting at the beginning of the 11 day celebration of cinema, Festival Director Gráinne Humphreys said:-“As an international festival, we aspire to champion emerging film makers, recognise established talents and celebrate the independent spirit of film makers the world over – fighting to bring their stories to audiences in their own way. Broken is a very special film – a beautiful story with a wonderful cast, delicate direction and its subtle bittersweet echoes of To Kill a Mockingbird – it’s an honour to bring its key players to Dublin for our Opening Night”
Speaking at the launch, Pat Magee, Managing Director Irish Distillers Pernod Ricard, commented:- “2013 marks the 11th anniversary of the Jameson Dublin International Film Festival which is growing from strength to strength and is a world class example of how a great sponsorship can bring real value to all parties.  Jameson are delighted to support the festival this year with an exciting new TV, outdoor and on-line campaign which will  greatly enhance the profile of the festival  with Irish consumers and we are particularly pleased to announce that Danny Devito will be present for a special Jameson Cult Film Club screening of L.A. Confidential
Director of Broken Rufus Norris, who attended the premiere, commented: “it’s a wonderful compliment for us that Broken has been invited to open this Festival, and I am totally delighted to be part of such a great event. This is doubly so for the fact that so much of the film was created here. Mark O’Rowe and I argued back and forth over the script for days on end in various cafes around the city, and the care he gave it and education he gave me were the foundations of the piece. I hope you folk like it – its body is English but the bones were made in Dublin.”
The festival continues until 24th February, with special guests including Danny DeVito for the Jameson Cult Film Club screening of LA Confidential and a Volta presentation by Brendan Gleeson after the screening of The War of the Roses; actor James D’Arcy who will attend the screening of Cloud Atlas; director Costa-Gavras who will attend the screening of his new film Capital along with actor Gabriel Byrne; iconic Chinatown screenwriter Robert Towne who will attend the screening of ShampooBorgen screenwriter Tobias Lindholm who will attend the screening of his new film A HijackingTop Gun casting director Margery Simkin who will give a talk on her phenomenal career and Academy Award nominee Dario Marianelli who will present a very special concert featuring a selection of his famous film scores.
About BROKEN:
Norris’ multi award winning Broken is a powerful, captivating and heartbreaking exploration of love in all its many forms: idealised, unrequited, and, ultimately, unconditional. With some light comic touches and a brilliant central performance from newcomer Eloise Laurence, this coming of age story deals with the tumultuousness of growing up in a world where the happy certainties of childhood give way to a fear-filled doubt, and where a complex, broken world fills the future. Featuring a great cast including Tim Roth, Cillian Murphy and Rory Kinnear. Broken will be in Irish cinemas on 8th March.

iPad app of The Book of Kells manuscript launched

Explore the Magnificently Decorated Manuscript Page by Page in High Resolution with New Book of Kells for iPad

In a unique synergy of expertise, a Trinity campus company,   X Communications and Trinity College Library have produced the Book of Kells for iPad app. Widely regarded   as one of the world’s most beautiful decorated manuscripts and a masterpiece of European medieval art, the Book of Kells for iPad app now allows the user to view its images in high resolution in all their richness.  It is also the first manuscript in its complete form available as an iPad app.

The app contains all 680 pages of the manuscript, permitting the user to scroll through the manuscript page by page. High resolution images of the most highly decorated pages are included at up to six times their original size.

Commenting on its significance, College Librarian, Robin Adams says: “The Book of Kells is arguably Ireland’s greatest cultural treasure and the Library exhibits the manuscript to hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. Working with X Communications we can now share its imagery, colour and imagination through an engaging and interactive medium.”

Professor Marie Redmond of the School of Computer Science & Statistics heads up X Communications, a campus company  that was founded in 1994. The company is an award-winning digital media agency that  has produced interactive installations for The National Museum, The National Library, the Hugh Lane Gallery, and the National Gallery.

The images used for the Book of Kells for iPad app were digitised by The Digital Resources & Imaging Services in Trinity College Library from transparencies provided by Faksimile-Verlag Luzern which published a facsimile of the manuscript in 1990.

Following on from the international award-winning DVD-ROM also produced by X  Communications, this app showcases the decorative skills of the scribes and the rich and varied colours used in the drawings. The app took just six months to complete and the team in X Communications included designer  Stephanie Francis and  programmer, Killian Walsh.

“The Book of Kells is a visual experience and the iPad is the perfect platform for viewing the images in high resolution especially on the new retina display screens. Viewing the entire manuscript, showing the pages in the exact order that they were written explains how the work was conceived and shows the amazing talent of the scribes. The wonder is that we could not produce a work of this extraordinary beauty and magnitude today ,” Professor Marie Redmond .
